Telangana's MBBS admission system is unique in India because of its Category A / B / C structure inside private medical colleges. Most other states have either state-quota / management-quota OR state-quota / NRI-quota splits. Telangana has all three — Category A (Convener), Category B (Management), and Category C (NRI) — at distinctly different fee bands. This guide explains how it works in 2026.
KNRUHS — the counselling authority
Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences (KNRUHS) handles Telangana MBBS counselling. The KNRUHS process is multi-phase, with each phase opening different categories of seats.
The three categories explained
| Category | Annual Fee | Open To |
|---|---|---|
| Category A (Convener) | ₹10k – ₹65k | Telangana domicile + high NEET |
| Category B (Management) | ₹11 – ₹13 L | All-India (no NRI required) |
| Category C (NRI) | ₹22 – ₹29 L | NRI sponsor required |
Category A is the convener quota — 85% of seats at Telangana fee rates (which are among India's lowest, often under ₹15k/yr at government and ~₹65k/yr at private). Requires Telangana domicile and a competitive NEET score.
Category B is Telangana's Management quota — distinctive because it does not require NRI sponsorship and is open to non-Telangana candidates. Fees in the ₹11–13 L/year range are significantly lower than NRI quota in other states.
Category C is the NRI quota — typical NRI fee bands (₹22–29 L/yr) and standard NRI sponsor documentation.
Telangana's 23-college network
23 partnered private medical colleges across Telangana — 14 in greater Hyderabad and 9 in other districts (Khammam, Karimnagar, Warangal, Mahabubnagar, Sangareddy, Siddipet, Narketpally). The list includes Apollo Hyderabad, Malla Reddy, Mamata (Khammam and Hyderabad), Kamineni, Mediciti, Maheshwara, Mahavir, MNR Sangareddy, Father Colombo Warangal. See the full list here.
Where Telangana wins
Category B (Management quota) at ₹11–13 L/year is one of the most accessible direct admission MBBS routes in India for non-NRI families willing to relocate.
The counselling phases
- Phase 1 — Category A (state quota) opens + Category B begins for all-India candidates
- Phase 2 — Category B vacancy round + Category C (NRI) opens
- Phase 3 — Mop-up across all three categories
- Stray vacancy — direct college-level reporting for remaining seats

Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between Category A, B, and C in Telangana?
Cat A is convener/state quota for Telangana domiciled candidates. Cat B is Management quota open all-India without NRI sponsor. Cat C is NRI quota requiring sponsor.
Can a non-Telangana candidate apply to Cat B?
Yes. Category B (Management quota) at Telangana private medical colleges is open to all Indian candidates regardless of domicile or NRI status.
Why is Cat B so much cheaper than NRI quota in other states?
Telangana's FRA sets relatively lower Cat B fee caps (~₹11–13 L/yr) compared to NRI quota in other states (~₹22–29 L/yr). Same student pays significantly less under Cat B than under typical NRI quota elsewhere.
