How B.Tech / B.E. admission actually works in 2026
Engineering admissions in India run on a layered system — JEE Main / Advanced for IITs and NITs, state CETs for state colleges, and AICTE-regulated Management Quota for private colleges. Most B.Tech candidates use more than one route in parallel.
Entrance exams
JEE Main (national) + state CETs (MHCET, KCET, COMEDK, AP-EAMCET, etc.)
Route 01
JEE Main → JoSAA Counselling (NITs, IIITs, GFTIs)
- Authority
- Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA), Government of India
- Seat share
- All NIT / IIIT / GFTI seats + IIT seats (via JEE Advanced)
- Who
- JEE Main qualifier (top ~2.5 lakh) → eligible for JEE Advanced → IITs. Otherwise NIT/IIIT/GFTI.

- JoSAA runs 6 rounds; you fill choices across all NIT/IIIT/IIT branches. Allotment is purely rank-based.
Route 02
State CET → State Counselling (state engineering colleges)
- Authority
- State CET cell (CET Cell Maharashtra, KEA, AP SCHE, etc.)
- Seat share
- 85% state-quota + government college seats in that state
- Who
- Domiciled candidate of that state with valid state-CET / JEE Main score (state accepts).
- How it works
- Register on the state CET portal, submit domicile + entrance score, fill college choices. Allotment via 3–4 rounds.
Route 03
COMEDK + Consortium routes (Karnataka private colleges)

- COMEDK Consortium
- Seat share
- Non-government quota seats in Karnataka private engineering
- Who
- Open to all India — COMEDK is conducted separately from KCET.

- COMEDK rank → COMEDK counselling for Karnataka private colleges (BMS, RVCE, MS Ramaiah, PES, Dayananda Sagar etc.).
Route 04
Management Quota — Private Engineering Colleges

- AICTE-approved private college, fee regulated by state authority
- Seat share
- Typically ~10% of intake per college
- Who
- Candidates with a valid entrance score (JEE/CET/COMEDK) but missing the state-quota cut-off.
- How it works
- Direct application to the college. Fees are higher than state quota but FRA / state-approved and disclosed in writing.

Yes — for Management quota seats in many private engineering colleges, JEE Main is not strictly required. They accept state CETs (MHCET, COMED-K, KCET) or institutional entrance tests. AICTE allows colleges to fill management seats with relaxed entrance criteria.
